U.S. to Allow Poultry Imports From Mexico
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it will add Mexico to the list of countries that can export poultry products to the U.S., effective Oct. 14. The department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service determined that Mexico’s inspection system gives consumers the same protection they would have in the U.S., clearing the way for millions of dollars of processed poultry products to enter the U.S. Still, poultry killed in Mexico is not eligible for export to the U.S. The animals must be slaughtered in the U.S. and then shipped to Mexico for processing, the USDA said.
