Broadcaster’s Suit Accuses ABC Sports of Bias

ABC Sports Inc., a unit of Walt Disney Co., refused to renew the contract of broadcaster Donna de Varona because it was biased against older women, the Olympic gold medalist alleged in a $5-million lawsuit. De Varona, 52, said ABC Sports paid her less, gave her inferior assignments and ultimately fired her because of her “advancing age,” according to court papers filed Monday. The company’s emphasis on attracting younger male viewers prompted it to deny her job opportunities that it afforded other broadcasters, the suit alleged. In a statement, ABC Sports said de Varona had been treated fairly.
