Need any more proof that the U.S. labor market is tight? Or that Internet companies will try just about anything to get eyeballs to their site?

Then you’ll want to check out the “Win a Free Employee for a Year” contest sponsored by AllBusiness.com.

Small-business owners can register at https://www.allbusiness.com to win $50,000 toward the first year’s salary of the employee of their choice. The prize package also includes 13 weeks of Internet-based job postings; free background checks and other employment screening services; online training courses; and a year’s worth of payroll, tax filing and direct deposit services for the new hire and up to 19 existing employees.

Internet sweepstakes have quickly evolved from freebies like T-shirts and software to pricey giveaways like travel and cash as “dot-coms” battle to attract visitors to their sites.

San Francisco-based AllBusiness.com, which bills itself as a one-stop information and resource shop for entrepreneurs, got the idea for the free employee contest by listening to its customers, said its chief marketing officer, Scott Waltz.

“It’s the No. 1 concern of small businesses right now,” he said. “How do they get and retain quality employees?”

Waltz said about 5,000 small-business owners have signed up for the drawing. Deadline for entry is April 27.

The winner will be chosen in a random drawing May 5.
