Cuban Boy

The matter of Elian Gonzalez could have and should have been resolved in the first two weeks after his rescue from the sea. The father, who we are now told loves and wants his son to return to Cuba, should have promptly applied for a visa and Fidel Castro should have released the father for this trip so he could have claimed his child. This didn’t happen and instead we saw orchestrated demonstrations in Cuba and the appointment of a guardian in Miami. The father still didn’t come; instead we saw two grandmothers. Elian stayed here after their visit.

If it were any other country, the father would have left immediately to reunite with his son. Castro has been the stumbling block, not the Miami relatives. Perhaps this little innocent child will be the one to bring down this power-mad dictator. I hope so.

As a Cuban American who has lived in this country for over 50 years, I wish to congratulate Atty. Gen. Janet Reno for her Solomonic decision in the Elian case.

I sympathize and understand the strong feelings of my Cuban brethren, particularly when so many of them have suffered the cruelties of one of the worst and longest tyrannies of recorded history. Even considering our extreme behavior at times, we did not deserve such a curse.
