Biotech Food

The April 9 commentary by Marc Lappe and Tom Hayden is basically a plot line for an “X-Files” episode. They imply that genetically modified foods are capitalist “toxoids” fostered on an unsuspecting public. Oh, yes, besides predatory corporations, this vast conspiracy also includes the FDA and all health officials. These Luddites could not be further from the truth. Actually, the FDA has been evaluating GM foods for years. Repeated studies have found no difference between GM foods and non-GM foods.

GM plants require less insecticide and remain fresh longer. New developments will produce plants, such as Vitamin A-enriched varieties, that will prevent blindness in millions of Third World children. Is that so terrible? Unfortunately, hysterical campaigns like these authors are fostering may deny these benefits. Too bad research hasn’t progressed to the point where we can genetically engineer common sense.
