Tampering Penalty

Re “Rampart Scandal Brings Legislation to Bar Tampering With Evidence,” April 13: Since current perjury penalties failed to deter police officers’ corruption, the Legislature’s decision to make evidence tampering a crime, while well-intentioned, will probably also be a futile act. If legislators really want to guarantee that we never experience another Rampart scandal, the penalty for law enforcement perjury and evidence tampering should be life imprisonment. After all, a life sentence is not too severe, considering no honest police officer will ever have to worry about it.
