Prime Minister Ivan Kostov on Friday rejected opposition demands that he quit over allegations that he covered up intelligence reports about corruption among senior officials.

Speaking Friday in parliament, Kostov said the government will not seek a vote of confidence “because it still enjoys unshaken confidence.”

He said Bulgaria is not going through a political crisis--despite media speculation that the corruption scandal could topple his government before its term ends next year.

“The only development that could be described as dangerous is the attempt to attain political goals by discrediting opponents,” Kostov said, referring to allegations by former Interior Minister Bogomil Bonev.

On Tuesday, Bonev called on Kostov to resign. Bonev was ousted in December.

The charges have unleashed a political storm in Bulgaria, where many people are still waiting for improvements in the economy to trickle down to them.
