Edison Plant

Re “Navajo Faction Urges Edison to Shut Down Power Plant,” April 21: I would not lose sleep if the power plant was shut down and I think anyone who has been in Bullhead City, Ariz., when the wind was light or calm would agree.

There is a feasible solution to the water problem. When the coal slurry arrives at the power plant, the coal is separated from the water. Couldn’t the flow of the pipeline periodically be reversed, sending the recovered water back to the mine to be reused for slurrying? Closing the loop would drastically cut the pumping requirement at the mine. That must be cheaper than sourcing water from Lake Powell and would make better use of a scarce desert resource.
