Saddam Hussein
Bravo to Tad Szulc for telling it like it is about Iraq and the ever-adept Saddam Hussein (“America’s Nemesis Wins New Respect,” Opinion, April 23). What is now clear is that the Iraqi president is in a class by himself, head and shoulders above the strategists and planners in this country when it comes to executing his goals and designs for Iraq, the Gulf area and beyond.
One can only recall Peter Jennings’ warning a few weeks before the start of the Gulf War when, after returning from an interview with Hussein in Baghdad, he observed, “The Americans, the British, French and other allies face an extremely, extremely formidable opponent in Saddam Hussein.” The U.S. had better get out of this struggle with Iraq soon or risk losing everything in the Persian Gulf.
