Episcopalian Group to Study Gay Issues
A group of lay Episcopalians has formed a task force that it hopes will help bridge the gaps within the denomination over homosexuality.
The New Commandment Task Force will hold regional meetings this year. It has no legislative authority but has received the support of Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold.
The issue--particularly the ordination of gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex unions--has split the denomination into separate camps. The subject is expected to dominate the July meeting in Denver of the church’s General Convention.
The task force will be headed by a layman, Louie Crew of Newark, N.J., and the Rev. Brian Cox, a priest in Santa Barbara.
