Move by Chief Opposition Party Could Work in Milosevic’s Favor
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — Serbia’s largest opposition party Sunday nominated its own candidate to oppose Slobodan Milosevic in September elections, ignoring appeals to rally behind a common standard-bearer and bolstering chances that the autocratic Yugoslav president will hold on to power.
The Serbian Renewal Movement nominated Vojislav Mihailovic, the opposition mayor of Belgrade--the Yugoslav and Serbian capital--to run for the presidency. The movement had previously said it would boycott the Sept. 24 presidential and local elections.
The rest of the opposition is expected to back Vojislav Kostunica of the center-right Democratic Party of Serbia. He has not yet agreed to run.
