* Abercrombie & Fitch Co. said fiscal second-quarter profit rose 12% to $21.2 million, or 21 cents a share, 2 cents better than forecasts, as sales jumped 16% to $231.5 million. The retailer cautioned that same-store sales will be weak in the third quarter because of tough comparisons against the year-ago period. Earnings were reported after the markets closed. * VoiceStream Wireless Corp., which agreed last month to be acquired by Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, said its second-quarter loss widened more than expected as it spent more to provide new services. VoiceStream posted a loss of $419.7 million, or $2.16 a share, compared with $132.8 million, or $1.39, a year earlier, as sales more than quadrupled to $453.6 million from $109.1 million. Analysts were expecting a loss of $1.62 a share. The company posted a 365% increase in customers to 2.6 million customers as of June 30.

* Waste Management Inc. said second-quarter profit dropped 47% to $200.4 million, or 32 cents a share, as expenses rose and revenue slipped 1.5% to $3.32 billion. The results, which were reported after the markets closed, beat forecasts by 1 cent.
