Nancy Vreeland; Fund-Raiser for Cultural Groups

Nancy Stolkin Vreeland, 57, former fashion designer and fund-raiser for the Music Center and other prominent Los Angeles institutions. After attending Syracuse University, Vreeland moved to New York City and joined the fashion world. Encouraged by Vogue Editor Diana Vreeland to try modeling, she became a floor model for designer Bill Blass, who recognized her fashion sense and promoted her to his assistant. After her family moved to Los Angeles, she worked for Jean Louis, the film fashion designer. In 1971, she manufactured and designed her own line of women’s sportswear, Stolkin Ltd. In 1982, she married architect Thomas Reed Vreeland, son of Diana Vreeland. Two years later, she closed her business and devoted herself to volunteer work for Southern California cultural institutions. She became known as an effective fund-raiser for the Music Center, Los Angeles Central Library, Cedars-Sinai Women’s Guild, the Costume Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the March of Dimes and the Junior League. The family requests that any donations be made to the Nancy Stolkin Vreeland Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, UCLA School of Medicine, 10833 Le Conte Ave., Room 27-139, Center for Health Sciences, Los Angeles, CA 90095, or the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, 630 West 5th St., Los Angeles, CA 90071. She died Friday of ovarian cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
