County Connection at Swim Trials
Orange County is a center for some of the nation’s best swimmers, as evidenced by the 45 county swimmers who will compete, beginning today, at the U.S. Olympic trials in Indianapolis. The list of local swimmers who have qualified to participate:
Amanda Beard
Age: 19
Hometown: Irvine.
School: Irvine High graduate, sophomore at Arizona.
Events: 100 and 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley.
Career highlights: Won silver medals in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke and gold in the 400 medley relay at 1996 Olympics. Held the American record in the 100-meter breaststroke for three years.
Bobby Brewer
Age: 26
Hometown: Forest Park, Ga.
School: Morrow High, Ga. Representing Team TYR, trains with Irvine Novaquatics.
Events: 100 and 200 backstroke, 200 IM, 50 freestyle.
Career highlights: Took third in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1991 Pan American Games; third in the 100 backstroke at the 1997 World University Games; won the 100 backstroke at the 1998 Spring Senior Nationals.
Billy Brown

Chad Carvin

Career highlights: Came back from a serious heart illness and a back injury to take second in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2000 Spring Nationals. Also took fourth in the 400 and 800 freestyle at the nationals.
