Around the Yard

Things to do this week:
* Sow sweet peas. The best way to grow sweet peas is from seed sown in the ground, and the best time to sow them is around Labor Day. With any luck, you’ll have flowers in time for the winter holidays.
Roger’s Gardens in Newport Beach, Flowerdale in Santa Ana and Costa Mesa, Heard’s in Westminster and Hortus in Pasadena are several nurseries that specialize in sweet pea seed. Many nurseries (including the Armstrong nursery chain) carry seed from Renee’s Gardens, and Renee’s has several fancy new kinds this year. They include one from New Zealand named Cheri Amour that has frilly and fragrant flowers, perfect for picking, and the elegant bicolored North Shore.
Seeds start arriving toward the end of the month.
