Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat arrived here Saturday for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on peace negotiations with Israel and the future of Jerusalem.

He was due to meet Mubarak in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

Acting Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, who met with Mubarak in Alexandria recently, has said that Egypt is trying to broker a solution to the problem of the holy city of Jerusalem.

The state-owned Al Ahram daily quoted Foreign Minister Amr Moussa as saying that Arafat’s talks came within the framework of Egypt’s contacts with the different players in the peace process and were aimed at narrowing the gaps among them while retaining justice, balance and respect for U.N. resolutions.

Arafat is expected to brief Mubarak on his recent talks with U.S. envoy Dennis Ross, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Norwegian Foreign Minister Thorbjoern Jagland.

Egypt, as a center of Arab influence, has often acted as mediator in Middle East peace negotiations.
