Rebel Leader Sees Chance for Peace Talks

The leader of the Zapatista rebels said he believes that the new governor of Chiapas could advance talks on greater Indian rights, the latest sign that peace may be possible in the poor southern state. A letter signed by rebel leader Subcommander Marcos and dated Friday--the day Pablo Salazar took office in Chiapas promising to release all “prisoners of conscience in the state, including Zapatista prisoners”--says Salazar “has the opportunity to contribute . . . to the end of the war.”
