Tarbut V’Torah Rallies to Win Tournament

Tarbut V’Torah overcame a 10-point deficit and beat Fairmont, 54-53, in the championship game of the Tarbut V’Torah Gelman Tournament Thursday.

The lead changed five times in the final two minutes, until Geoff Keith hit a free throw with 14 seconds remaining to put Tarbut V’Torah (8-0) up by one. Fairmont called a timeout, but was unable to get off a final shot.

Keith and Noam Dahti led Tarbut V’Torah with 19 points each, while William Washington scored 20 and Michael Pastrano 18 for Fairmont (8-2).

In the third-place game:

Long Beach Zinsmeyer 67, Liberty Christian 64--Zinsmeyer outscored Liberty Christian, 24-13, in the fourth quarter. Liberty Christian’s Paul Francis led all scorers with 28.

In the Anaheim Holiday boys’ tournament:

No. 4 El Toro 78, Katella 54--Senior Matt Green, El Toro’s 6-8 center, scored 22 points and had 15 rebounds. Ashkan Nazeri had 18 points and Chris Fairbanks had 12 rebounds for the Chargers (8-0) in the second-round game.

No. 8 Newport Harbor 41, Magnolia 37--Tony Melum had 18 points and 15 rebounds and Aaron Yarnal had 12 points to lead Newport Harbor (8-1), which will play El Toro today at 6:20 p.m. in a semifinal game.

No. 9 Capistrano Valley 67, Esperanza 61--Matt Sweany made four three-pointers and had 22 points, and Jeff Gloger scored 19 points for Capistrano Valley (3-0) in a second-round game.

Anaheim 65, Servite 64--Quinn Hawking scored on an offensive rebound with 13 seconds remaining to win the consolation game. Hawking finished with 38 points. In the La Crescenta Crescenta Valley tournament:

Crescenta Valley 86, San Clemente 83 (OT)--San Clemente’s Eli Owens hit two tying free throws with 43 seconds remaining in regulation, but Crescenta Valley scored the first six points in overtime and led the rest of way. Tim Burnette led the Tritons (7-1) with 18 points in the pool-play game.

In the El Dorado Gary Raya tournament:

No. 4 El Dorado 65, Corona 37--Mike Wulff scored 14 points, David Patten and Kyle Miller had 12 points each and Kevin Cook had 11 points for El Dorado (7-1).

In the North Orange County Championships:

Valencia 58, Whittier California 52--Emanuel Ortega scored 17 points and Scott Briggs had 15 for the Tigers (6-3).

In the La Quinta Lady Aztec girls’ tournament:

Saddleback 58, La Quinta 33--Junior Alisa Carrillo scored a game-high 22 points for the Roadrunners (6-1). Thao Ly scored 15 points for La Quinta (2-3).

In the Riverside La Sierra Academy tournament:

Fairmont Prep 86, San Gabriel Academy 52--Sophomore forward Sonia Hilson had 30 points and 12 rebounds and was named tournament MVP as Fairmont Prep won the championship.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

No. 8 Edison 65, Mater Dei 46--Edison connected on a school-record 12 three-pointers. Bianca Ziemann scored 20 points, making four three-pointers, and Ashleigh Noda and Rachael Ziemann added 19 points each. Lindsay Gabler led Mater Dei with 12 points.
