Protesters Target Black Officer’s Death
About 300 protesters crammed into Providence, R.I., City Hall, demanding that officials fire and charge with murder two white officers who fatally shot a black fellow policeman they mistook for a criminal. Demonstrators stood near the office of Mayor Vincent Cianci Jr. chanting, “No more racist cops!” and waving signs that read, “Police farce.” Cornel Young Jr., 28, off duty and in street clothes, was shot Jan. 28 when he saw a gunman confront two officers outside a restaurant and rushed to help. The officers fired at him after he failed to follow their orders to drop his weapon.
