Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates is behind a $56,000 donation that will provide 22 computers at four Orange County libraries.

“It’s the first time we’ve gotten funds from the Bill Gates Foundation,” said John M. Adams, county librarian. “We’re glad because it’s going to help.” The county did not apply for the grant from the Seattle-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation but was contacted as part of the foundation’s nationwide offer to provide funds for expanding public access to computers and the Internet.

The funds will be used to buy six computers at the county’s branch libraries in Stanton, Costa Mesa and Westminster. In addition, four computers will be bought for the University Park library in Irvine.
