Internment Sites

Re “$4.8 Million Sought for Preservation of Internment Sites,” Feb. 9: Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Rep. Robert Matsui and Rose Ochi are to be lauded for their support to preserve Manzanar. And the conversion of the old auditorium building into a visitor’s center is, indeed, sorely needed for displays, etc. of the camp’s four-year existence.

However, for many years now, Shi Nomura (of Garden Grove) has tirelessly built and maintained a Manzanar Center at the Eastern California Museum in Independence, which contains an outstanding collection of photos, memorabilia, artifacts, etc. Also available at the museum are fascinating and enlightening videos (from 8-millimeter movies) of Manzanar, taken by the internees.
