Charity Reports 300 Abducted for Slavery
Arab militiamen backed by the Sudanese government have kidnapped 300 black women and children to sell into slavery, a Swiss aid agency said. Christian Solidarity International, or CSI, a charity that buys Sudanese slaves and frees them, said the militia had attacked 11 villages in southern Sudan on Monday. CSI told the Reuters news agency in Nairobi, Kenya, that the militia “enslaved an estimated 300 black African women and children” and killed 16 civilians. The raids were confirmed by Sudanese rebel officials in Nairobi. CSI, which supports the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army, quoted local officials in Bahr el Ghazal province as saying that the captives had been driven north to be sold as slaves.
