KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — Viewed as a pariah by much of the world, Afghanistan’s Taliban regime drew heaps of praise Friday for helping defuse a difficult hijacking drama.
India, which was openly hostile to the fundamentalist Taliban rulers before the crisis began Dec. 24, had nothing but warm words after the 155 hostages were freed.

Pakistan, India’s bitter rival, also praised the Taliban’s handling of the crisis.
