‘Arkan’ Didn’t Seek a Deal, Tribunal Says
Slain Serbian paramilitary leader Zeljko Raznatovic, who was known as “Arkan,” made no contact with the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague to offer testimony in return for a deal, chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte said in Brussels. Arkan was assassinated Saturday at a hotel in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia and Yugoslavia. A Belgian lawyer has said that Arkan, indicted for war crimes, made contact with him in June to find out what would happen if he gave himself up to authorities in Belgium, where he escaped from prison in 1979.
