Charlotte Filmore

It was heartwarming to view the Jan. 16 front-page picture of Charlotte Filmore, 100, who worked in the White House during the Eisenhower presidency, being honored by President Clinton by visiting the White House and finally entering through the front door. I am concerned, however, that the caption perhaps mistakenly led readers to feel that there was strong racial bias in treatment of White House employees during Eisenhower’s administration. It is probable that most employees were expected, regardless of race, to enter the White House through a side door then and probably even to this day.

I would be curious to know what door most employees are expected to enter during this current administration. My compliments to Clinton for managing to find himself in yet another “emotionally loaded” photo op.
