Failed Test

Re “Interceptor Misses Target in Missile Shield Test,” Jan. 19: Once again the failed plan to erect an umbrella to defend against an imagined terrorist missile threat has proven to be little more than smoke and mirrors. This most recent attempt to demonstrate the feasibility of a missile defense system failed miserably, and at an excessive cost in funds.

How long must we listen to those who are enchanted with Ronald Reagan’s distant promise of “Star Wars”? Rational scientists and qualified experts have long suggested that this line of reasoning is seriously flawed. The numerous unsuccessful tests lend credence to this and suggest that this extravagant expenditure might better be spent on more worthwhile programs.

While those enamored with a missile defense spend billions, it appears the terrorists simply plan to cross our borders with explosives, not missiles. If we are incapable of destroying a missile whose track and destination are well known, who would believe we could track and destroy a surprise-launched missile?
