London Mayor Sees Euro as Necessary

London’s first elected mayor took office and asserted that joining the European single currency was a fundamental need for the city. Mayor Ken Livingstone and the 25-member London Assembly, elected May 4, formally assumed their powers to administer a $5.3-billion budget and oversee services including transportation, police and fire protection.
