Re “Mexico’s Ruling Party Loses Presidency in Historic Election,” July 3: Mexico is free at last! I wish that my father, a native of Mexico, had lived to see the PRI booted from power. He would have been so proud of his fellow countrymen.

This Fourth of July, as I recall and honor the sacrifices of our American forefathers, I will also toast Vicente Fox and wish him and our neighbors in Mexico success in their quest to establish true freedom fully for the first time.

Time will tell if this former Coca-Cola executive is the “real thing.” It remains to be seen how effective he will be in fulfilling his ambitious campaign promises, which include fighting corruption, improving education and helping the poor.

Though his ideals are commendable, he may have a tough time actualizing them, particularly reducing corruption, as it is so institutionalized in Mexico, particularly in relation to the powerful drug cartels. I hope he’s successful, but at the same time I fear for his life.

Voting is a sacred civic duty. Naturalized American citizens who participate in foreign elections should lose their citizenship, since they have violated their oath of allegiance to the U.S.

A resident alien who votes in foreign elections should be returned to the nation where his or her loyalties and heart reside.
