A U.S. Teenager Dies of Sunstroke in the Israeli Desert
An 18-year-old U.S. tourist died of sunstroke after getting lost during a hike in Israel’s Judean desert, police said Friday.
Esther Strobel died Thursday after collapsing in the 115-degree heat, police spokesman Shlomo Abutbul said.
Strobel’s body was identified Friday by her brother, who lives in Israel. Police said she was from New Jersey, but they did not know her hometown.
Strobel was traveling with 11 other teenage girls she had met in Jerusalem. The group rented a minivan for a day of touring in Israel’s southern Dead Sea region.
The driver of the minivan told Israel radio that when he dropped the teens off at a cave near Arad, he told them to take a guide. But, he said, they ignored his warning.
