Quick and Easy Fix for Worn-Down Wood Furniture

From Today's Homeowner

Wood furniture and cabinetry are often assembled with dowel joints or round mortise-and-tenon joints. Often, the round dowel or tenon will dry out and shrink or simply wear down through years of use. Loose joints and wobbly furniture are the result.

To fix the trouble spots, spread some carpenter’s glue on the dowel, then completely wrap it with cotton thread or fine string. Coat the wrapped dowel with more glue and reassemble the joint. If the tenon still isn’t tight, apply more glue and wrap on more thread.

Reassemble and clamp the joint. When the glue dries, the joint will be as good as new.
