Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky and his actress wife, Janet Jones, are about to have a 12,000-square-foot home built for them on six acres overlooking Sherwood Country Club in the Thousand Oaks area.

Known as “The Great One,” the hockey legend, 39, retired as a player in April 1999 after a brilliant 21-year career, 20 of those years with the National Hockey League, playing for Edmonton, the Kings, St. Louis and the New York Rangers.

He spent 7 1/2 seasons with the Kings in the L.A. area, where he and his wife have maintained a home since they were married in 1988. They are expecting their fourth child this month. This year, the former hockey star became managing partner of the Phoenix Coyotes.

No dollar figure was divulged on the Gretzkys’ new home, but high-end projects like theirs typically cost about $300 a square foot to build. That would put their home cost at an estimated $3.6 million, not including the land.

Designed by architect Richard Landry, the home will be Georgian in style and have seven bedrooms, including a guest house and a poolhouse/gym. Construction, due to start this month, is expected to be completed in 2001.

Actor Robert Hays has sold his Hollywood Hills home to Mark Brazill, a co-creator and executive producer of the Fox sitcom “That ‘70s Show,” and his wife, Wendy, in the mid-$2-million range.

Hays, 52, starred in the ABC sci-fi series “Starman” in the late 1980s, after he played Ted Striker in the movies “Airplane” and “Airplane II.” In 1998, he co-starred in the WB sitcom “Kelly Kelly.” In March, he was in the TV special “SnowFest 2000.”

Hays bought a retreat at Malibu Lake. He sold a Spanish hacienda on an acre with a tennis court and a pool.

The Brazills, in their 30s, listed their Hollywood Hills home at $849,000 with Garrison Key of Key Properties, West Hollywood. Key also represented them in their purchase.

Film producer-financier Richard Naegele (“Executive Power,” 1998) no sooner finished refurbishing a home he bought in February from singer Frank Sinatra Jr. than he decided that the residence was too large for him and re-listed it at just under $4.8 million.

The Beverly Hills-area home, built in 1980 on a four-acre promontory, has a five-bedroom, 6,000-square-foot main house and a two-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot guest house. The home also has a tennis court, pool and two spas.

Singer Rod Stewart once lived in the guest house, and Sherry Lansing, chairman of Paramount Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, and her husband, Oscar-winning director William Friedkin, leased the home for about five years.

Naegele bought the home for $4.5 million and spent two months on renovations, sources said.

Joe Babajian at Fred Sands Estates, Beverly Hills, has the listing.
