From Times Wire Reports

At least 42 people died and 38 were injured when a portion of a hill collapsed on unauthorized slums in eastern Bombay, India, after more than 24 hours of heavy rain, city officials said. The tin and mud huts built into the hillside were smashed when the mud loosened because of the downpour. “Rescue work is still going on. The rain is making it very difficult to move the debris,” a municipal official said. In the western state of Maharashtra, the government declared a holiday for schools and colleges because of the rain, which has crippled transportation services, particularly the train network that links the suburbs to downtown Bombay.
