10 Are Charged in Slaying of ‘Arkan’
Ten people were charged in the killing of Zeljko Raznatovic, Serbia’s most prominent warlord, the public prosecutor’s office said. Raznatovic, better known as “Arkan,” was facing U.N. tribunal indictments for alleged Balkan war atrocities. He was shot dead in the lobby of a Belgrade hotel in January. Prosecutors said four people have been charged with shooting Arkan and that six others face charges of aiding the killers. Arkan’s death triggered speculation that Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic’s government may have wished to silence a potential witness to atrocities in the wars in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.
