Investigators said Friday they believe the son of a well-known Mexican singer was kidnapped and killed because he happened to be with the attacker’s true target.

The bodies of Leonardo Martinez Flores, 21, of Corona, Calif., and Aquiles Veljiz Hernandez were discovered Wednesday, several days after they were kidnapped at Veljiz’s house in Tijuana.

Investigators at the Baja California state attorney general’s office said they believe Veljiz was the target of the kidnapping. Martinez, son of Mexican singer Beatriz Adriana Flores, was seized because he was visiting Veljiz, they said.

The kidnappers reportedly demanded an $800,000 ransom. Investigators are looking into drug trafficking as a possible angle in the case.

Flores was a well-known Mexican actress and singer in the late 1970s and early 1980s and recently has revived her career. Her son, born in the United States, was visiting Mexico on vacation, according to officials.
