Former Commander of Ft. Campbell Is Reassigned to Texas
The Army general who was commander of Ft. Campbell, Ky., when a homosexual soldier was murdered there last year is being reassigned from his new Pentagon job to a base in Texas at his request for family medical reasons, the Army said Tuesday.
The Army said Maj. Gen. Robert Clark had given up his post as vice director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff to become deputy commander of the 5th Army at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio “for compassionate family requirements.”
An Army report last week concluded that there had been no atmosphere of homophobia at Ft. Campbell and that no officer should be held accountable in the beating death of Pfc. Barry Winchell in July 1999.
Two soldiers were convicted and sentenced to prison in the death of Winchell.
