A tornado struck this southwestern Minnesota town Tuesday night, killing at least one and damaging or destroying dozens of homes and other buildings.

Snowplows cleared roads so emergency vehicles could get to the injured. Rescue vehicles from towns in a 40-mile radius were dispatched to the area.

A rescue command post was set up at a technical college in town, said City Manager Bill Lavin.

A sheriff’s dispatcher confirmed one death. No other details were immediately available. Broadcast reports said more than 10 people were injured.

Lavin said he “very definitely” saw a tornado on the ground that went back into the clouds. He heard “the typical train sound and the popping of the eardrums as it went overhead.”

Laurie Evenstead, Yellow Medicine County Jail administrator, said reports indicated as many as five funnel clouds were spotted at one time.
