EU Proposes Ban on ‘Conflict Diamonds’

The European Union’s executive body in Brussels proposed new regulations that would prohibit the import of “conflict diamonds” from Sierra Leone into the EU’s 15 member nations. The proposal would bring the EU countries into line with a U.N. Security Council resolution passed earlier this month asking U.N. members to ban the import of diamonds mined by African rebel groups and sold to buy weapons for use in civil wars.
