Opposition Vows to Fight Merger Plan

Opponents of Belarus’ president, Alexander G. Lukashenko, pledged to press on with a boycott of parliamentary elections scheduled for Oct. 15 and to redouble efforts to derail Lukashenko’s campaign to merge the nation with Russia. More than 1,000 liberals and nationalists who gathered in Minsk, the capital, declared that the country’s survival depends on upholding the principles of independence established when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
