Flooding, Landslides Kill 74, Media Say

Flooding and landslides in separate regions of China have killed 74 people and left thousands homeless, state media in Beijing reported. Torrential rain triggered floods and landslides that left 38 people dead and 12 missing in Sichuan province, the New China News Agency said. Hail, flooding and landslides have devastated areas in Gulin and Xuyong counties, 1,000 miles southwest of Beijing, since the beginning of June, the report said. In Gansu province, about 800 miles southwest of Beijing, widespread flooding May 31 killed 36 people and left thousands homeless, the agency said. The news agency said the floods in Gansu caused $21.5 million in damage and were considered the worst in 150 years. It said disaster relief materials were on the way to the areas.
