Gay activists on Saturday vowed civil disobedience if necessary to ensure that a World Pride festival would be able to march past the ancient Roman Colosseum next month despite orders from the City Council to use a different route.

“If we don’t get permission, we will form a peaceful human chain as far as the Colosseum on July 8,” said Titti De Simone, who heads the Arcilesbica group.

Rome’s City Council has withdrawn its support for the July 1-9 World Pride festival.

The organizers want to pass the Colosseum as part of a protest against the death penalty.
