A golf tournament held at Sherwood Country Club earlier this month raised $60,000 for the Wellness Community Valley/Ventura, a nonprofit organization that offers support programs for cancer patients.
More than 100 people participated in the event, including Olympic figure-skating gold medalist Scott Hamilton, who spoke at an awards ceremony afterward about his successful fight against cancer.
The Wellness Community, one of four branches in the Los Angeles and Ventura County areas and one of 15 nationwide, offers free workshops by psychologists, oncologists and nutritionists for cancer survivors and their loved ones.
This year’s tournament raised $20,000 more than last year’s and was praised by the organization’s officials as a huge success, said Alan Hopkins, the tournament chairman.
