Palevsky Pledges $20 Million to University of Chicago

Millionaire and longtime Democratic financial backer Max Palevsky pledged $20 million to the University of Chicago on Wednesday to enhance the quality of residential life on campus. For his generosity, the university named two residence halls after him.

“For most students, college is the first time they’ve lived away from home,” Palevsky, of Los Angeles, said in a statement. “In this society there often are not sufficient structures for young people, and I trust it will be an important thing to live in a structured, intellectual community.”

The Max Palevsky Residential Commons will consist of three buildings, which will house a foreign language media center, computer rooms, soundproof music practice rooms and accommodations for more than 700 students. They are scheduled to open in the fall of 2001.

Palevsky was introduced to the campus during World War II, attending meteorological school there as an officer in the U.S. Army. He enrolled at the university after the war, graduating in 1948 and later serving as a trustee from 1972 to 1982.
