The City Council is slated to vote Tuesday on a measure to support Census Day 2000, the April kickoff of the 2000 census.

The U.S. Census Bureau gathers population and demographic data every 10 years. The information is used to help better allocate $100 billion to state and local governments for community programs and services.

The programs include education, housing and community development and heath care services for the elderly.

State and local governments use census data for planning and allocating funds for new school construction, highway safety and public transportation systems, new roads and bridges, public buildings such as libraries and location of police and fire departments.

Census data are also used to realign or create new congressional districts.
