DAMASCUS, Syria —
President Hafez Assad named a senior official of his ruling party as the new prime minister after the government resigned Tuesday.
Mohammed Mustafa Miro, a member of the Baath Party’s Central Committee, will form a new Cabinet, an Assad spokesman said.
The shake-up was seen as a move by Assad to boost his effort to implement promised social and economic reforms. It also reflected the leadership’s desire to inject new blood into the aging Cabinet.
