Cal State Fullerton Wins With Help of ASU Pitching

Cal State Fullerton took advantage of Arizona State’s pitching problems to defeat the Sun Devils, 5-4, Tuesday night at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

With one out in the first inning, Arizona State pitcher Franco Pezely gave up four consecutive hits as the Titans took a 2-0 lead.

Right-hander Robby Milner came in for the Sun Devils in the second inning and allowed two runs on three hits, giving Fullerton a 4-1 lead.

Arizona State (20-6) used five relievers, including three in the first three innings.

With runners on first and second, left-hander George Carralejo picked up his first save of the year for Cal State Fullerton (10-7).

In another nonconference game:

Concordia 10-13, California Christian 1-2--Charles Chatman, Derek Patterson and Jason Radwan had home runs, as host Concordia (13-11), led 6-0 after three innings and went on to complete the the doubleheader sweep.

In the first game, the Eagles had a six-run third and a five-run fourth in an easy win.

Patterson pitched six innings, striking out nine and allowing only one walk, for the victory.

Montclair State 9, Chapman 1--George Gallagher and Brian Ellerson each had a home run and three RBIs to lead visiting Montclair State (5-2-1). Jason Miller had a solo home run for Chapman (10-2).

In nonconference softball:

Incarnate Word (Texas) 4, Vanguard 1--Andrea Saucedo singled and scored a run on a wild pitch for Vanguard (12-10).

Vanguard 2, Mobile (Ala.) 0--Sophomore Gina Liebengood threw a perfect game, striking out 13, and Val Vanaken and Jill Jessen each drove in a run for Vanguard (13-10) in the sixth inning.
