The photograph, which contest judges described as unforgettable, also took top honors for spot news photography, one of five first-place awards The Times received in the national competition sponsored by the Press Club of Atlantic City, N.J.

Other Times first-place winners are: foreign correspondent Paul Watson for news beat coverage in “A Witness to War”; Edmund Sanders in business news coverage and/or commentary for “The Privacy of Financial Records”; Wally Skalij for photography portfolio; and Anacleto Rapping for his sports photograph “Brandi Chastain Freeze-Framed.”
