* Re “Tribe Plans to Build its Second Casino,” March 14: A 240-member Palm Springs Indian tribe will be introducing 750 slot machines, which are expected to net $54 million per year, which works out to $225,000 per tribe member. This is in addition to the income that this tribe will earn from blackjack, poker, high-stakes bingo and off-track betting, which will now be legal under Prop. 1A. It is also in addition to the income the tribe already earns from its existing hotel-casino.

The voters have created a class of passive multimillionaires, rubbing elbows with the likes of Donald Trump and Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer, to rob mostly working-class Californians of their earnings. At least 5% of these individuals, I understand, will become hopelessly addicted.

What a proud day.
