Madame Chiang
As a toddler, decades before women were allowed to be intelligent, my mother told me of having a well-liked, intelligent schoolmate at Agnes Scott School for Girls in Georgia. Soong Mayling had become Madame Chiang Kai-shek, she tried to translate to my child mind. In the ‘60s, Madame Chiang wrote articles that I still remember for their compassion and starch.
On March 15, when I read your article on her endorsement of Taiwan’s Nationalist candidate, I did a double take: This cannot be the same Madame Chiang, for my mother would be 104 by now--something is not quite right. Then I read her age, 102--another vote for the physical benefits of a passionate interest in the world.
