Thomas Dolby’s Beatnik Files for Public Offering

Beatnik Inc., whose technology integrates music and sound into Web sites, filed to raise as much as $63.25 million in an initial stock sale.

The company, started by musician Thomas “Dolby” Robertson, predicts Web sites one day will have soundtracks as elaborate as those of movies and said it hopes to profit from the shift.

Robertson, best known for his 1980s hit “She Blinded Me With Science,” claims his company’s technology can interweave sound with the text and graphics of a Web site.

Backers include the venture capital firm Mayfield Fund, which holds a 15% stake, and Zomba, which holds a 9.1% stake.
