Marjorie R. Van Dyke; Former Teacher

Marjorie R. Van Dyke, a former kindergarten teacher, died Monday at a convalescent hospital in Newbury Park. She was 94.

She was born May 11, 1905, in South Bend, Ind. She moved with her family to California at a young age.

After receiving a teaching credential in elementary education at Broad Oaks College in Pasadena, she taught kindergarten for 32 years, 25 of them in Laguna Beach.

She married Maurice Van Dyke in 1930. They lived in Laguna Beach for most of their married life.

She was a member in the Laguna Beach Presbyterian Church, the Laguna Beach Garden Club and the Orange County Chapter of Phi Delta Gamma.

In 1993, she moved to the convalescent hospital Ventura Estates in Newbury Park and became a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Thousand Oaks.

Van Dyke was preceded in death by her husband in 1986.

She is survived by sons Les of Westlake Village; Jerry of Windermere, Fla.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ventura Estates Chapel in Newbury Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the children’s ministry program at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church or to a children’s organization of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Bros. Griffin Mortuary in Thousand Oaks.
